CARL AZUZ, CNN 10 ANCHOR: Only one day until Friday, awesome. We`ll grateful you`re taking 10 minutes to catch up on current events with us.

My name is Carl Azuz. Let`s go. About 100 miles of seawater separate mainland China from the Island of Taiwan. These two places have a complicated and sometimes contentious relationship and Taiwan`s defense minister says the military tensions between them now are the worst he`s seen in 40 years.

Last week, China flew 150 warplanes into Taiwan`s airspace. They included fighter jets and bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Taiwan says it hasn`t done anything since then to provoke an attack from China, but that the island is making military preparations in cases conflict breaks out.

Why is all this happening? Taiwan is an ally of the United States. Last year, under the Trump Administration the U.S. approved $1.8 billion dollars in weapon sales to Taiwan. This year under the Biden Administration, the U.S. approved $750 million in weapon sales to Taiwan. Supporters say this sends a message that America stands with Taiwan and against any move China may make to invade the island.

But even though China has never governed Taiwan, it sees the island as the territory of mainland China, and China`s communist government blames America for quote, "collusion" with Taiwan and for increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait by sailing U.S. warships there.

For its part, the American government says it has strongly urged China to stop its military, political and economic pressure of Taiwan. U.S. officials say their commitment to the island is quote "rock solid", so you could see how when tensions rise in the Taiwan Strait, they stretch across the Pacific and it`s the same politics that separated China from Taiwan in the first place that still keep them apart.

제 이름은 칼 아즈즈입니다. 어서 가요. 약 100마일의 바닷물이 중국 본토와 타이완 섬 사이를 갈라놓습니다. 두 곳의 관계는 복잡하고 때로는 논쟁의 여지가 있는데 대만 국방장관은 현재 양국간의 군사적 긴장이 40년만에 최악이라고 말하고 있습니다.

지난 주 중국은 150대의 전투기를 대만 영공에 띄웠습니다. 그들은 핵무기를 운반할 수 있는 전투기와 폭격기를 포함했습니다. 대만은 그 이후 중국의 공격을 유발하기 위해 아무 조치도 취하지 않았다고 말하고 있지만 대만은 분쟁이 발생할 경우에 대비해 군사적인 준비를 하고 있다고 말했습니다.

왜 이런 일이 일어나는 걸까요? 대만은 미국의 동맹국입니다. 작년, 트럼프 행정부에서 미국은 대만에 18억 달러의 무기 판매를 승인했습니다. 바이든 행정부 시절인 올해 미국은 대만에 7억 5천만 달러의 무기 판매를 승인했습니다. 지지자들은 이것이 미국이 대만의 편에 서서 중국이 타이완을 침략하려는 어떠한 움직임에도 반대한다는 메시지를 전달한다고 말합니다.

그러나 중국은 타이완을 통치한 적이 없음에도 불구하고 타이완을 중국 본토의 영토로 보고 있으며 중국 공산정부는 대만과의 충돌이라는 인용구와 대만해협에서의 미국 군함들의 항해를 통해 대만해협의 긴장을 고조시키고 있다고 비난하고 있습니다.

미국 정부는 중국에게 대만에 대한 군사적, 정치적, 경제적 압박을 중단할 것을 강력히 촉구했다고 말했습니다. 미국 관리들은 이 섬에 대한 그들의 약속은 "바위가 단단하다"는 말을 인용하고 있기 때문에 대만해협에서 긴장이 고조될 때 어떻게 태평양을 가로질러 뻗어 나가는지 알 수 있을 것이라고 말하고 있으며 이는 그들을 애당초 대만과 갈라놓았던 것과 같은 정치라고 말했습니다.
