While so much international attention is focused right now on what`s happening in Ukraine, some experts on international affairs are focused on what could happen in Taiwan.

 

This is an island that`s a little bigger than the U.S. state of Maryland. It`s located about hundreds of miles southeast of mainland China and Taiwan and China have a very sensitive relationship. China`s communist government considers the island to be a part of China.

 

It has since the 1940s when the communist party won a civil war and forced the nation`s previous government to flee to Taiwan. Since then, every communist leader of the mainland has promised to take control of the island. But Taiwan has its own government, a democracy and wants to keep things as they are. So their dispute is not new.

 

What is are concerns that China may be looking at Russia`s invasion of Ukraine and the international response to it and considering doing something similar in Taiwan. To be clear, we don`t know if that`s going to happen. The U.S. supports Taiwan like it does Ukraine. It sent weapons to the island like it has to Ukraine and America wants to limit China`s influence in Asia, like it wants to limit Russia`s influence in Eastern Europe.

 

But if the international sanctions on Russia are not enough to stop its invasion of Ukraine, would a similar policy toward China be enough to prevent it from targeting Taiwan?

이 섬은 미국 메릴랜드주보다 조금 더 큰 섬입니다. 중국 본토에서 남동쪽으로 약 수백마일 떨어진 곳에 위치하고 있으며 대만과 중국은 매우 민감한 관계를 맺고 있습니다. 중국 공산정부는 이 섬을 중국의 일부로 간주하고 있습니다.

 

1940년대 이후 공산당이 내전에서 승리하고 이전 정부를 대만으로 피신시켰습니다. 그 이후로, 본토의 모든 공산주의 지도자는 섬을 장악하겠다고 약속했습니다. 그러나 대만은 민주주의 국가인 자국 정부를 가지고 있으며, 현 상태를 유지하고자 합니다. 그래서 그들의 논쟁은 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 

 

중국이 러시아의 우크라이나 침공과 이에 대한 국제사회의 반응을 보고 대만에서도 비슷한 행동을 할 것을 고려하고 있는 것 아니냐는 우려가 있습니다. 분명히 말씀드리면 그렇게 될지는 알 수 없습니다. 미국은 우크라이나처럼 대만을 지지합니다. 우크라이나처럼 섬에 무기를 보냈고 미국은 동유럽에서 러시아의 영향력을 제한하려는 것처럼 아시아에서 중국의 영향력을 제한하려 합니다.

 

하지만 러시아에 대한 국제적인 제재가 우크라이나 침공을 멈추기에 충분하지 않다면, 이런 비슷한 제재가 대만을 겨냥하고 있는 중국을 막기에 충분할까요?
